Live this Fall: A Tonic for Desperate Times

This November, Theatre Gargantua returns to the stage with a powerful new cycle of work, two years in the making.  Emerging from a global state of isolation and uncertainty, Gargantua presents a vital exploration of hope: A Tonic for Desperate Times.  This world premiere investigates our instinct for optimism, and the surprising places hope can be found — in the fractal patterns of nature, the swing of a pendulum, the murmuration of starlings in flight.
A Tonic for Desperate Times is a richly layered work born out of Gargantua’s signature exploratory workshops. This riveting performance interweaves provocative stories, live music, striking choreography, and stunning design true to Theatre Gargantua’s unique, Dora Award-winning style.

And it can all be experienced in person.  Gargantua is at the forefront of Toronto’s return to theatres.

Artistic Director Jacquie P.A. Thomas said: “The last year drained our city of live theatre, it left us parched.  Tonic is our attempt to refresh the city — to rediscover and reimagine hope.”
She added, “This project is about finding structure in the chaos, and proclaiming joy and gratitude.  We couldn’t be happier to welcome our audiences and artists home with this piece.”

Overseeing the long-awaited return of live audiences is Gargantua’s General Manager, Alec Harmer: “It’s an exciting step, and a calculated one.  We’re thrilled to welcome our patrons, donors, staff and artists back to the theatre, and we’re taking every precaution to ensure their safety.  Measures include mandatory vaccines for our staff, artists, and audiences, masks and distancing, along with contactless ticketing and rigorous cleaning.  Our precautions allow you to simply enjoy the show.”

Premiering in the heart of Toronto’s vibrant west end, A Tonic for Desperate Times is a communal experience of resilience and courage.  A balm for injured souls.
