Synopsis

Two exes reunite to sort their shared belongings before moving out of their apartment. In dividing their assets, Hannah and Marley unpack their relationship and its downfall. Using a unique style of shadow-play, this piece explores loss, queerness and what it means to be a modern-day lesbian.

Marijke Reinink (she/her) –  Creator & Performer

Marijke is a multidisciplinary theatre creator, performer and, musician from Toronto. She is always looking for new ways to explore storytelling and expand her theatrical practice. In recent years she directed the first staging of Spell by Barbara Blatner (a continuation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest), performed across Canada in various tours and, presented her original work in festivals like the Toronto Fringe and Theatre Gargantua’s Unfinished Cabaret. Marijke is thrilled to be back at Theatre Gargantua presenting her play Baggage; the second piece she has created employing her unique style of shadowplay. Marijke is extremely grateful for the continued guidance and support from Jacquie Thomas, Michael Spence, and the Theatre Gargantua team.

Mya Leworthy (she/her) – Director/Shadow Puppeteer

Mya Leworthy (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in the GTA. She graduated from George Brown Theatre School in 2022. Since then, she has stretched her artistic abilities and added directing, stage managing, and writing to her arsenal of talents. Recent credits include Stage Manager (An Ode To Home, Toronto Fringe Festival) Director a new one act play (Money, Fergus Grand Theatre, Culture Days Festival). Money will be heading to the Grand River arts short play festival in the fall! Her most recent endeavor is co-creating her own theatre company, Rule of Three Theatre. Last  summer they toured to the Hamilton, Guelph and London Fringe festivals with their award winning show The Velveteen Rabbit. Mya and her co-founders wrote, produced, directed and starred in the production, hoping to bring smiles to the patrons, young and old. Mya hopes to bring stories to life that help people feel less alone.

Sarah Schmidt-McQuillan (she/her) – Performer

Sarah is an actor, musician, and creator based in Toronto. She is a graduate of George Brown College’s Theatre Performance program and is classically trained in both voice and piano, having showcased her musical skills across the province. Since graduating, Sarah has told stories both on stage and screen. She starred in the feature film Domestic Fowl and has had several chances to share her love of classical text while working alongside Panoply Collective and others. Recently, she turned her creative eye to the larger picture as she produced the successful Fringe run of the play “Painting By Numbers”. She is incredibly passionate about new works and cannot wait to bring this iteration of Baggage to life!

Sarah feels incredibly lucky to be surrounded by the gangle of artists who inspire, encourage, and support her on the daily. Thank you. I am because you all are.
